The death penalty as a deterrent?

Obviously the death penalty as compared to no penalty at all will deter people from committing crimes. However, I'm more looking for a comparison between the deterring effects of life imprisonment and those of the death penalty. Does anyone have any good, relatively unbiased sources for that sort of thing?
